About R²D Science
R2D Science is a research and development program built around Recursively Realized Distinguishability (R2D): a mathematical framework for representing scientific objects in a form that artificial intelligence can interrogate across disciplines and scales.
Science has powerful mathematics for describing what objects do. What it largely lacks is a common mathematics for defining what the scientific object itself is when the boundary of observation changes.
R2D addresses that problem by treating microstate, macrostate, constraint, multiplicity, and recurrence as boundary-dependent mathematical objects. Changing the boundary therefore does not simply blur or coarse-grain the same object. It changes the state domain and replaces the scientific object being described.
A Mathematical Interface for Science
Artificial intelligence is exceptionally capable at operating on mathematics. The challenge is that science is presented to AI through many different physical ontologies: molecules, particles, fields, forces, organisms, geometries, and other domain-specific objects.
R2D provides a common mathematical interface between those scientific descriptions and AI.
Its purpose is not to replace established scientific laws. It is to transform the objects appearing in those laws into a common boundary-dependent mathematical representation so that relationships across disciplines and scales can be examined directly.
In this sense, R2D functions as a front end for AI-driven scientific discovery.
From Muscle to a General Framework
R2D emerged from research on muscle and molecular motors, where chemistry, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and mechanics can all be applied to the same biological system while the scientific object changes with scale.
A myosin molecule can be the object. A collection of molecular motors can be the object. A muscle fiber can be the object.
The laws remain valid within the boundary where their states and observables are defined, but the mathematical object itself changes as the boundary changes.
Formalizing that observation led to a recursive mathematical architecture that can now be tested far beyond muscle.
The R2D Program
R2D Science has four closely connected goals:
Develop the formal framework.
Maintain and extend the R2D Canon as the authoritative mathematical statement of the theory.Apply it across science.
Test the same primitive architecture against problems in thermodynamics, statistical physics, quantum mechanics, gravity, geometry, fluid mechanics, biology, and other domains.Make the framework usable by AI.
Provide machine-readable versions of the Canon and tools that allow AI to retrieve, transform, compare, and interrogate scientific structure using R2D.Preserve the development of the theory.
Archive formal releases on Zenodo so that each major stage of the framework remains permanently available and citable.
Read It. Run It. Test It.
R2D is intended to be used rather than merely accepted.
Read R2D to understand the mathematical architecture.
Run R2D by giving the framework to AI and applying it to a scientific law, paradox, paper, or unsolved problem.
Test R2D by asking whether it can preserve established scientific relationships while removing unnecessary inherited assumptions about the objects those relationships describe.
Don’t believe R2D. Try it.
