Possibility

Directional support comes from the enclosing count domain

Multiplicity tells us how many realizations are possible within a local state domain.

But multiplicity alone does not determine which local state is directionally favored.

R2D therefore introduces a second kind of possible count:

compatible enclosing multiplicity.

The distinction is fundamental:

Multiplicity describes the possibilities belonging to a local state.
Possibility describes how those local possibilities extend into an enclosing state domain.

R2D denotes the logarithmic measure of that enclosing extension by

\[ P. \]

Possibility is therefore an across-boundary count relation.

Multiplicity →

Local Multiplicity Does Not Supply Direction

At boundary \(B_n\), macrostate \(i\) has multiplicity

\[ W_{n,i} = \left| \pi_n^{-1}(i) \right|. \]

Its logarithmic coordinate is

\[ S_{n,i} = \ln W_{n,i}. \]

This tells us how many compatible formal microstates belong to \(i\).

It defines the native possible-count landscape.

But suppose the same local state domain can participate in different enclosing conditions.

The local multiplicities

\[ W_{n,i} \]

can remain unchanged while the realized occupancy changes.

Therefore the native multiplicity landscape cannot, by itself, be the complete source of direction.

Something outside the local count domain must distinguish how the local alternatives participate in the larger relation.

That quantity is possibility.

The Enclosing Boundary Defines Additional Compatibility

Consider local macrostate

\[ i \in \mathcal{M}_n. \]

Now move one boundary outward to

\[ B_{n+1}. \]

The enclosing boundary contains many possible realizations.

Only some of those realizations are compatible with local state \(i\).

Let the set of enclosing realizations compatible with \(i\) be

\[ \mathcal{E}_{n+1|n,i}. \]

Its cardinality is

\[ \boxed{ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} = \left| \mathcal{E}_{n+1|n,i} \right| } \]

This answers a different question from local multiplicity.

Local multiplicity asks:

How many local realizations belong to state \(i\)?

Compatible enclosing multiplicity asks:

How many enclosing realizations are compatible with realization of local state \(i\)?

These counts belong to different boundaries.

Local Multiplicity and Enclosing Multiplicity

The distinction can be written:

\[ \boxed{ W_{n,i} = \text{local possibilities classified as } i } \]

whereas

\[ \boxed{ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} = \text{enclosing possibilities compatible with } i. } \]

The local state itself is not physically stretched into the enclosing boundary.

Rather, \(i\) is the local classification relative to which enclosing compatibility is counted.

This matters because recursive comparison is a comparison of count relations, not the persistence of one object across boundaries.

Recursive Replacement →

Extension Per Local Possibility

A local macrostate with large multiplicity naturally contains more local realizations.

So simply counting the total number of compatible enclosing realizations is not yet enough.

R2D therefore defines the mean compatible enclosing extension multiplicity per local possibility:

\[ \boxed{ K_{n+1|n,i} = \frac{ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} }{ W_{n,i} } } \]

This asks:

For each local possibility classified as \(i\), how much compatible enclosing realization is available?

The quantity \(K\) is still a count ratio.

No energy, force, probability, or physical potential has yet been introduced.

Possibility Is the Logarithm of Compatible Extension

R2D defines possibility as

\[ \boxed{ P_{n,i} = \ln K_{n+1|n,i} } \]

or equivalently,

\[ \boxed{ P_{n,i} = \ln \left( \frac{ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} }{ W_{n,i} } \right). } \]

Because

\[ S_{n,i} = \ln W_{n,i}, \]

and the compatible enclosing entropy is

\[ S^{\mathrm{comp}}_{n+1|n,i} = \ln \Theta_{n+1|n,i}, \]

possibility can also be written

\[ \boxed{ P_{n,i} = S^{\mathrm{comp}}_{n+1|n,i} - S_{n,i}. } \]

Possibility is therefore an across-boundary difference in logarithmic possible count.

Possibility Is Not Local Multiplicity

This distinction is easy to lose because both quantities involve possible count.

But they answer different questions.

Multiplicity

\[ W_{n,i} \]

counts possibilities inside the local state classification.

Possibility

\[ P_{n,i} \]

measures how those local possibilities participate in the compatible realization structure of the enclosing boundary.

Thus:

\[ \boxed{ \text{multiplicity} \neq \text{possibility}. } \]

Multiplicity belongs to the native local landscape.

Possibility is defined across boundaries.

Possibility Is Not Probability

The word “possibility” can sound probabilistic.

That is not what \(P\) means in R2D.

Probability is a normalized quantity.

Possibility is defined before normalization as a count relation among compatible realizations.

Thus:

\[ \boxed{ P \neq \text{probability}. } \]

Probability may later become a useful physical or statistical read of unresolved possible count.

But it is not primitive to the definition of \(P\).

Possibility Is Not Energy

Likewise,

\[ P \]

is not primitive energy.

Part I has not yet introduced joules, temperature, chemical potential, work, or any other energetic coordinate.

Possibility is dimensionless.

Later thermodynamic mappings can assign energetic meaning to particular physical realizations of the count relation.

But the primitive definition remains:

\[ \boxed{ P = \text{logarithmic compatible enclosing extension}. } \]

This distinction allows the same formal quantity to be investigated across domains before any one physical interpretation is imposed.

Absolute Possibility Does Not Define Direction

Suppose two local states \(i\) and \(k\) have the same compatible enclosing extension:

\[ K_{n+1|n,i} = K_{n+1|n,k} = K. \]

Then

\[ P_{n,i} = P_{n,k} = \ln K. \]

The enclosing multiplicity could be enormous.

But the two local states receive equal support.

Therefore,

\[ \boxed{ \Delta P_{n,i\rightarrow k} = 0. } \]

A large common possibility does not, by itself, produce direction.

This is crucial.

Possibility provides enclosing support.
Direction requires a difference in possibility.

Directional Possibility

For a readable local transition

\[ i \rightarrow k, \]

define the possibility difference

\[ \boxed{ \Delta P_{n,i\rightarrow k} = P_{n,k} - P_{n,i}. } \]

Substituting the compatible extension multiplicities gives

\[ \boxed{ \Delta P_{n,i\rightarrow k} = \ln \left( \frac{ K_{n+1|n,k} }{ K_{n+1|n,i} } \right). } \]

Thus:

  • if \(K_{n+1|n,k} > K_{n+1|n,i}\), then \(\Delta P>0\);
  • if \(K_{n+1|n,k} = K_{n+1|n,i}\), then \(\Delta P=0\);
  • if \(K_{n+1|n,k} < K_{n+1|n,i}\), then \(\Delta P<0\).

Direction emerges from unequal compatible enclosing extension.

A Simple Example

Suppose two local states have equal native multiplicity:

\[ W_{n,i} = W_{n,k} = 10. \]

Now suppose state \(i\) participates in

\[ 100 \]

compatible enclosing realizations while state \(k\) participates in

\[ 1000. \]

Then

\[ K_{n+1|n,i} = \frac{100}{10} = 10, \]

while

\[ K_{n+1|n,k} = \frac{1000}{10} = 100. \]

So

\[ P_{n,i} = \ln 10, \]

and

\[ P_{n,k} = \ln 100. \]

The directional possibility is

\[ \Delta P_{n,i\rightarrow k} = \ln \left( \frac{100}{10} \right) = \ln 10. \]

The local multiplicities are identical.

The directional difference arises entirely from the enclosing compatibility relation.

This is the simplest demonstration of the R2D causal inversion.

The Local Landscape Can Stay Fixed

Suppose

\[ W_{n,i} \]

and

\[ W_{n,k} \]

remain unchanged.

The native multiplicity landscape has not changed.

But if the enclosing relation changes,

\[ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} \rightarrow \Theta'_{n+1|n,i} \]

or

\[ \Theta_{n+1|n,k} \rightarrow \Theta'_{n+1|n,k}, \]

then the compatible extension ratios change.

Therefore

\[ \Delta P \]

can change.

It can increase.

It can vanish.

It can reverse sign.

All while the local multiplicity landscape remains unchanged.

Thus:

Enclosing compatibility can create, cancel, or reverse local directional support without changing native local multiplicity.

This is one of the central formal results of Part I.

The Local and Enclosing Counts Fit Together

For the transition

\[ i \rightarrow k, \]

the directional possibility difference can be expanded as

\[ \Delta P_{n,i\rightarrow k} = \ln \left( \frac{ \Theta_{n+1|n,k} }{ W_{n,k} } \right) - \ln \left( \frac{ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} }{ W_{n,i} } \right). \]

Rearranging gives

\[ \Delta P_{n,i\rightarrow k} = \ln \left( \frac{ \Theta_{n+1|n,k} }{ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} } \right) - \ln \left( \frac{ W_{n,k} }{ W_{n,i} } \right). \]

Since

\[ \Delta S_{n,i\rightarrow k} = \ln \left( \frac{ W_{n,k} }{ W_{n,i} } \right), \]

we obtain

\[ \boxed{ \Delta S_{n,i\rightarrow k} + \Delta P_{n,i\rightarrow k} = \ln \left( \frac{ \Theta_{n+1|n,k} }{ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} } \right). } \]

This equation makes the architecture transparent.

The left side separates:

  • native local multiplicity difference, and
  • across-boundary possibility difference.

Together they equal the difference in enclosing multiplicity compatible with the two local alternatives.

Possibility Favors Compatible Realization

The state with greater compatible enclosing multiplicity has greater directional possibility.

This does not mean that an abstract quantity called \(P\) physically pushes an object through a landscape.

Possibility is not a new force.

It is a count relation.

The primitive statement is:

The local state compatible with more enclosing realization has greater enclosing directional support.

R2D therefore locates the source of direction in relational compatibility rather than in an intrinsic push attached to the subordinate state.

Possibility Is Not Generated by Occupancy

Occupancy describes realized structure:

\[ c_{n,i}. \]

Possibility describes compatible enclosing count:

\[ P_{n,i}. \]

Therefore

\[ \boxed{ \text{occupancy does not generate possibility}. } \]

The causal ordering instead runs from enclosing compatibility toward local realization:

\[ \boxed{ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} \rightarrow P_{n,i} \rightarrow \Delta P_{n,i\rightarrow k}. } \]

Only afterward does the directional relation participate in determining how occurrence is expressed as occupancy.

Occupancy and Occurrence →

“Possibility Pulls Occupancy”

This gives meaning to one of the compact statements used in R2D:

Possibility pulls occupancy.

The word pulls should not be interpreted as a primitive mechanical force.

It means that unequal enclosing compatibility biases which local occupancy structure is supported.

Schematically,

\[ \boxed{ \text{enclosing compatibility} \rightarrow \text{directional possibility} \rightarrow \text{local occupancy bias}. } \]

The subordinate transitions remain necessary to realize the occupancy change.

But the directional relation does not have to originate inside those transitions.

The Causal Inversion →

A Molecular Example

Consider a molecular switch with two readable states:

\[ M_1 \qquad\text{and}\qquad M_2. \]

The switch has a local multiplicity structure.

But its realized distribution may depend on chemical conditions, mechanical constraint, temperature, applied fields, or other enclosing relations.

Changing one of those enclosing conditions can alter which switch state is preferentially occupied without redefining the native switch-state classification.

R2D interprets this architecture as:

\[ \text{local state multiplicity} + \text{enclosing compatible multiplicity} \rightarrow \text{directionally organized realization}. \]

Part II later asks how familiar thermodynamic quantities physically calibrate this dimensionless count relation.

But the primitive architecture is already present before those units are assigned.

Possibility Comes From Outside the Local Boundary

This gives a precise meaning to the statement that the source of local direction lies “outside” the local boundary.

It does not mean a mysterious external agency.

It means that the directional relation cannot be fully specified from the native local multiplicity landscape alone.

The relevant information belongs to how the local alternatives participate in an enclosing count domain.

Thus:

\[ \boxed{ \text{local structure} \neq \text{complete directional relation}. } \]

Direction is inherently across-boundary.

But Possibility Is Not Sufficient by Itself

Greater compatible enclosing possibility does not uniquely determine the local outcome.

A second relation can retain part of that directional possibility against local distinguishable change.

R2D calls that relation retention.

For a local transition,

\[ i \rightarrow k, \]

the eventual local asymmetry takes the form

\[ \boxed{ \Delta A = \Delta P - \Delta R. } \]

So possibility answers:

How strongly does enclosing compatibility favor one local alternative over another?

Retention asks:

How much of that directional possibility is opposed or retained by constraint?

That is the next step.

Constraint and Retention →

The Architecture So Far

The count architecture can now be extended:

\[ \boxed{ \begin{array}{c} \text{boundary} \\ \Downarrow \\ \text{local multiplicity} \\ \Downarrow \\ \text{possible local structure} \end{array} } \]

while across the enclosing relation,

\[ \boxed{ \begin{array}{c} \text{compatible enclosing multiplicity} \\ \Downarrow \\ P \\ \Downarrow \\ \Delta P \\ \Downarrow \\ \text{directional support} \end{array} } \]

Multiplicity structures what can occur locally.

Possibility distinguishes how those local alternatives participate in the enclosing whole.

Core Equations

Local multiplicity

\[ \boxed{ W_{n,i} = \left| \pi_n^{-1}(i) \right| } \]

Compatible enclosing multiplicity

\[ \boxed{ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} = \left| \mathcal{E}_{n+1|n,i} \right| } \]

Enclosing extension per local possibility

\[ \boxed{ K_{n+1|n,i} = \frac{ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} }{ W_{n,i} } } \]

Possibility

\[ \boxed{ P_{n,i} = \ln K_{n+1|n,i} } \]

or

\[ \boxed{ P_{n,i} = \ln \left( \frac{ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} }{ W_{n,i} } \right) } \]

Directional possibility

\[ \boxed{ \Delta P_{n,i\rightarrow k} = \ln \left( \frac{ K_{n+1|n,k} }{ K_{n+1|n,i} } \right) } \]

Local and enclosing count relation

\[ \boxed{ \Delta S_{n,i\rightarrow k} + \Delta P_{n,i\rightarrow k} = \ln \left( \frac{ \Theta_{n+1|n,k} }{ \Theta_{n+1|n,i} } \right) } \]

The Key Distinction

The simplest summary is:

Multiplicity tells us how many realizations belong to a local state.

Possibility tells us how those local possibilities extend into the enclosing count domain.

Directional possibility is the difference in that enclosing support between local alternatives.

This is where R2D first locates the mathematical source of direction.

The next question is what opposes or retains that possibility.
